The agriculture industry in general, and the poultry industry specifically, continues to be struck by large-scale crises that often are handled poorly in the press and result in more trauma to the industry than necessary. This unnecessary damage is fueled by a population that is increasingly ignorant about agricultural products and modern practices, an industry that neglects proper crisis communication planning, and a failure to provide a single voice with well-crafted messages.

The recent dioxin contamination in Germany affected the entire industry, with China, Slovakia and South Korea halting imports and egg sales in Germany plummeting 20%. While some financial impact was inevitable, did it need to be this bad?

This Thursday at Alltech's breakfast talk we'll discuss how we are all in this together. We have a responsibility to our own companies and to the industry as a whole to do proper crisis planning. The seminar will focus on the rudiments of crisis planning, offer some very practical media interaction skills, and end with roundtable discussions tackling very realistic scenarios for the poultry industry.

Peter Kerr is President of KerrCommunications, and a professor of Communications at Asbury University in Kentucky, USA. Peter has dealt with many large media outlets around the world (CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, BBC, China TV4, Univision, New York Times, Wall StreetJournal, USA Today, NPR, London Times, Der Spiegel, Aljazeera, etc.) and used to work at the Pentagon training senior White House and DOD officials how to talk to the media. He led media relations in DC for the Ronald Reagan State Funeral, and did media relations and assisted with crisis planning for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 Alltech/FEI World Equestrian Games.
