The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) provides a humane alternative for retired racehorses. They currently care for over 1,800 horses on farms across the country. Some horses are retrained for a second career as show jumpers, companion horses, handicapped riding horses, and even polo horses. Others are provided a dignified retirement.
The TRF has also helped several correctional facilities implement equine vocational training programs that help inmates as well as horses. The inmates receive valuable job skills and the therapeutic emotional benefits of caring for another living creature.
Julie Walawender explained the benefits of the TRF at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games trade show.
